"Every year my father and I would grab a container and take a walk to our fields filled with vegetables. We would harvest everything we needed to fill the pot that was simmering on an outdoor cookstove (that he built). The time spent gathering the vegetables, cleaning and prepping them properly, I will always hold dear to my heart."
~ Krista Reader-Chatman
Come along on a walk through the fields. From August to October, we'll show you how to harvest your own vegetables while taking in the many sights and learning about what we do. At the end of the walk, you'll find a cookhouse, with a fire burning in the cookstove and the pots waiting for all the veggies they can hold.
Once in the pot, this boiled feast becomes the traditional Jiggs Dinner, known all over Newfoundland and wherever Newfoundlanders are found. Anywhere you go on this beautiful island of ours, you will find variations of the same dish. There is one thing that always stays constant: the vegetables, and nothing tastes better than fresh from the fields, harvested by your own hand.
